Consumerism

Consumerism...The Musical

 Fight Consumerism

Consumerism

What is a similar message in all these videos?  How do they get their point across?  Which video makes you feel "guilty" about consumerism?  Which one(s) points out excess without making you think that the world is coming to an end because of frivolous spending?  Do any offer a solution to excess consumerism?

And the week #11 Winner is...

For the second week in a row... TRAVIS FRENCH!!  Great job, Travis!  When asked how he felt about the back-to-back wins Thursday evening, Travis said, "Wow!  This is the best thing that's ever happened to me...In my life!!!  Mr. Williams, thank you for this incredible opportunity you've given me.  I still don't think you're the wisest teacher in our school, but you're ok.  In fact, you're my all-time favorite economics teacher (even though you  really stink at the Stock Market Game)."  When asked of his plans for his pretzel or ice cream, Travis said he was going to pick the ice cream again, but  promised he would keep it with last week's reward in his locker until after wrestling season.

And in the Golf portion of the stock market game, after 5 weeks atop the leader board, we have a new negative leader.  Unseating Brandon took some time, but Sean Farrell came through when it counted most, crushing Brando to "win" by over -$10,000.  When contacted after the closing bell of the exchange a very emotional Sean stated that his new goal was not just to be the negative leader next week, but to actually finish with less than $7,500 total.  "Claiming the lead was an accomplishment, especially over a competitor like Brandon," Sean said, "but now that I'm here, I've got to set new goals and watch out for others trying to take my title."

And the winner is....

No longer the Bridesmaid, Travis French has finally broken through to the top on the day when it mattered most!  Accumulating a total of $130,499.30 to post the largest margin of victory to date in the game ($9669.15).  Now that he has the big target on his back, will he continue to surge ahead?  Will Activision give him the boost that he needs?  Will Nick, Jolynn, or Emily come back next week?  Will any of the bottom feeders make a big jump up to the top?

On a different note, in the stock market golf game, Sean Farrel had what seemed to be an insurmountable lead going into Thursday's crucial competition, but Brando--the undisputed warrior of the depths--showed he still has what it takes to keep his title!  Up by several thousand dollars, Brandon saw his net value plummet until he finally settled $5200 below his nearest competitor.  Wow, now that's performance under pressure!

Friday, November 6, 2009

And the winner is...

Nick Benjamin!!!  With $123,481.10, Nick moved past Travis to win by $847.56 late Thursday afternoon!  The last 3 weeks have seen 3 different lead changes.  Will this continue or will Nick build on his lead and pull away from the others?!?!?!  Will Travis continue to be the bridesmaid and never the bride?!?!?!  Will Mr. Williams be able to keep from becoming a bottom feeder?!?!?!  Will Sean Farrell ever be able to over take Brandon Demara in what has become the epic battle of Stock Market Game Golf?? (After briefly taking the bottom lead, Sean then saw his portfolio grow by over 100% to finish in a solid #47!)  Brandon can rest easy knowing he's "leading" now by a solid $19,000 over his next nearest competitor--that's amazing!!!

Mr. Williams and the bottom feeders!!

It's official, Mr. Williams has officially rejoined the proud ranks of the bottom feeders!  Also of note, our SMG golf leader had his title taken away at least 2 times yesterday, but eventually had a strong push to regain the "lead" and reclaim #48!!  Good job, Brando!!

The Week #8 winner is...

Emily Gac!  Congratulations.  After attaining the lead last Friday and then shooting up to $260,000 it looked like Emily was just going to walk away with the title.  However, that was before a very turbulent week that saw her lead erode and saw Travis French and Zeb Jordan share the lead Thursday before Emily was able to come back to finish with $127,120.17, giving her a $613.22 lead over Zeb.  Our two time champion Kylee Lane saw her fortunes drop as she moved down to #28.  Can she make it back to the top next week?  Great job all!
